NILES — An area resident was sentenced to prison Monday at the Niles courthouse for felony drunk driving.
Brian Christopher Meadows, 45, pleaded guilty to third offense drunk driving and was sentenced to 14 months to five years in prison. He has credit for 11 days already served and must pay $1,818 in fines and costs.
The incident occurred Oct. 10, 2024 in Niles Township. His blood alcohol level was .09, just above the legal limit. It was actually his fifth conviction for drunk driving.
Defense attorney Shayne Williams said Meadows has a place to stay, recently got a job and has been going to counseling.
Meadows said he’s “really trying to get my mind right.” “I really, really can do this,” he said relative to serving a probation sentence. “You will never see me in front of you again.”
“I hope what you say is true,” said Berrien County Trial Court Judge Gordon Hosbein. “You’ve had opportunities for rehabilitation before, I don’t think it is appropriate in this instance.”
In two other cases, people received probation and credit for time served sentences.
Roy David Floyd, 38, pleaded guilty to malicious destruction of property under $200 and unlawful use of a motor vehicle and was sentenced to credit for two days served and $485 in fines and costs.
The incident occurred Aug. 17, 2021 when he and another person took a van and spray painted it.
Floyd had his probation revoked and given credit for time served from an earlier case.
Russell Wentz, 45, of Niles, pleaded guilty to attempted carrying a concealed weapon and was sentenced to two years probation, credit for three days served and $598 in fines and costs.
The incident occurred Sept. 17, 2024 in Niles.
