Brandywine girls earn 59-27 Senior Night win over Loy Norrix

NILES — Sharing the wealth.

That unselfish approach to the game is what has the Niles Brandywine girls basketball team one game from attaining a perfect regular season.

Team work was once again a key factor for No. 1-ranked Brandywine, now 21-0, Tuesday as Josh Hood’s Lady Bobcats rolled past Division 1 Kalamazoo Loy Norrix (3-15) 59-27 in the Bobcat Den on Senior Night.

Brandywine ends the regular season with a non-conference road test at Division 1 St. Joseph (16-4) on Thursday.

Prior to tipoff, Brandywine honored seniors Miley Young, Adeline Gill, Adelyn Drotoz, Ireland Prenkert, Lexi Troup, Paige Krisher and Niyah Mason.

“Senior Night at Niles Brandywine is always special because these girls have been through the wars. If you stick it out all four years that means you are a very hard worker and have held yourself to a high standard in our program,” Hood said.

All seven of the Lady Bobcat seniors scored in a first-half that saw Brandywine jump out to leads of 19-4 after one quarter and extend its advantage to 31-6 by halftime.

Eleven of Brandywine’s 13 players scored in the contest led by sophomore guard Lily Gill with 10 points. Young, Drotoz and Adeline Gill contributed eight apiece, while McKenna Price and Troup added six each for the Lady Bobcats, who made 21-of-68 (31 percent) attempts from the floor and 10-of-14 (71 percent) at the foul stripe.

Adeline Gill also pulled down six rebounds for Brandywine, while Lily Gill had five and Young and Nason yanked down four each.

Loy Norrix (3-15) was led in scoring by Jordan Ivy and Sariah Lawrence with six points apiece.

The Knights shot 12-of-45 (27 percent) from the floor and 2-of-6 (33.3 percent) at the free-throw line.

Brandywine reeled off the game’s first 19 points, including triples from Drotoz, Troup and Price. Young also scored four during the Lady Bobcats early run.

Lawrence’s pair of free throws with 36.3 seconds left in the opening period put Loy-Norrix on the scoreboard. The Knight scored again seconds late on a layup by Lawrence.

Brandywine led 19-4 entering the second quarter.

Lilly Gill scored five points for Brandywine and the Lady Bobcats got key layups from Drotoz, Adeline Gill and Prenkert to open up a 31-6 lead by intermission.

“All of our seniors scored in the first half and they worked very hard. Anytime you can sub five in and five out and not lose anything out on the court, that says a great deal about the depth of our program. Much of that has to do with our seven seniors,” Hood said.

Young scored six points, all on layups, during the third quarter to help push the Brandywine advantage to 42-12 entering the final stanza.

“We spread the ball around and shot it pretty well. We’ve watched several films on Loy-Norrix and we noticed that they always play zone. We took them out of their bread and butter which is either a  1-2-2 or a  1-3-1 zone. If you are shooting the ball well very early, you force them to play a defense they aren’t accustomed to playing. That means you are doing your job correctly,” Hood said.

“I was very proud of the way we shared the ball. Lexi Troup isn’t a normal starter but she hit back-to-back threes to get us going in the first half. I don’t think anyone had more than 10 points individually tonight. These girls care more about our team success than the name on the back of their jersey.”
