Buchanan to host groundbreaking for McCoy Creek Trail Extension Project

BUCHANAN — The City of Buchanan has announced plans to host a groundbreaking ceremony to kick off the construction of the McCoy Creek Trail Extension Project.

The city is inviting the community to attend the McCoy Creek Trail Extension Groundbreaking at 10 a.m. Monday, March 10 at River St. Joe Brewery, 15475 Walton Rd., Buchanan.

The existing McCoy Creek Trail is an approximately four-mile improved shared use path that runs along McCoy Creek, through prairie, downtown Buchanan and E.B. Clark Woods. It includes historical markers and natural elements that tell the history of Buchanan and the region.

The McCoy Creek Trail Extension Project will extend the existing McCoy Creek Trail a half-mile along Schirmer Parkway, down River Street across River Street Bridge and into Buchanan Township. This extension would not only provide recreational opportunities, but also much needed alternative transportation options for residents and visitors to the region.

“We encourage all to attend this celebration of a monumental community achievement,” said Mayor Mark Weedon. “So many people have played a part in McCoy Creek Trail over the decades, from the original visionaries to the coalition of residents, business, and local, state and federal partners who have made this trail extension a reality. There is no doubt in my mind we will continue to extend our beloved McCoy Creek Trail that goes right through beautiful Historic Downtown Buchanan to make regional and even intrastate connections.”

The project team has invited local, state, and federal representatives and partners to attend the celebration of this exciting milestone for Buchanan and the Region. The event will feature a groundbreaking ceremony with brief remarks by dignitaries followed by refreshments and fellowship.
