Oak Crest’s Performing Arts Center Renovation Enhances Senior Living Community

The performing arts center at Oak Crest, an Erickson Senior Living community in Parkville, Md., has recently undergone a significant renovation, transforming it into a hub of activity and creativity for its residents. The 225-seat venue, located within the Town Center Clubhouse, now features new carpet, seating, lighting, and sound systems, making it a premier space for concerts, theatrical performances, and community events.

Joe Carlson, coordinator for the community’s in-house TV station, emphasizes the center’s role in fostering social connections among residents. ‘Having a performing arts center within the community provides a space where people can gather and meet one another through common interests,’ Carlson notes. The center hosts a variety of activities, from live theatrical performances to improv acting classes offered in partnership with the Community College of Baltimore County.

John Gregory, a resident and former math teacher, shares his experience with the center’s new lighting and sound equipment. ‘The renovations have completely transformed the facility,’ Gregory says, highlighting the enhanced capabilities that allow for more dynamic and professional-looking performances. The Light and Sound Committee, a volunteer group, supports events not only in the performing arts center but also in other venues across the 86-acre campus.

Keith Derrickson, a retired music teacher and pianist, appreciates the upgrades for his performances and the annual Follies show he produces. ‘The Follies scripts are prepared in advance, and we conduct three rehearsals with script in hand. It’s meant to be funny, so if someone messes up their lines, it adds to the humor,’ Derrickson explains, underscoring the joy and community spirit the center fosters.

The renovation is part of a broader multimillion-dollar investment by Erickson Senior Living to enhance amenities and services across its communities. Alongside the performing arts center, the Crestview Station Clubhouse has also been updated, featuring new spaces for fitness, arts, and socializing. These improvements reflect the community’s commitment to providing a vibrant and engaging environment for seniors, where they can explore new hobbies, showcase their talents, and enjoy a rich social life.
