NILES — More than 50 people gathered in downtown Niles Monday afternoon for a rally protesting the actions of Elon Musk and his influence over US government agencies.

“Hey hey, ho ho, Elon Musk has got to go,” chants echoed throughout downtown as the group – made up of dozens of Berrien and Cass County residents – gathered outside Rep. Tim Walberg’s office in Niles demanding the congressman to do more to curb the power of Elon Musk and the Department of Government Efficiency.

“We’ve been calling our Congressmen, we’ve been calling our Senators but we have to do more than that,” said Naomi Ludman of Dowagiac. “We’ve got to help raise public awareness and give people the opportunity to really speak out. Musk was not elected – when our elected senators and congressmen go to the treasury or USAID, they’re blocked from entering these buildings that are built and run by taxpayer money. You don’t block elected officials from entering a government building.”

The demonstration in Niles was one of several that took place throughout the state on Monday. Ludman said a letter written on behalf of concerned Congressional District 5 Constituents was sent to Walberg’s office. Walberg was on his way to Washington D.C. at the time of the demonstration and declined to comment.

“This is offensive and unconstitutional and Congressman Walberg was elected by the people of the fifth district,” Ludman said. “This is not a partisan issue – we have a two-party system but this is a system of laws.”
